Browse the site by topic or region. Each country included in the site has its own page and RSS feed, and the site is available in 43 languages.
Use the site with students to learn about and research current events and citizen stories." SLJ 9/15
Newsmap
"Newsmap, a project of design engineer Marcos Wekamp, shows trending news in 15 countries in real-time. Color-coded based on the topic (world, technology, business, sports, etc.), the site uses different sized boxes to illustrate trends—the bigger the box, the more news stories. Turn countries and topics “on” or “off” based on how much information you want to see. Compare trending topics in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, and other countries. Since the site displays news based on each country’s language, this is a useful site for world language learners to practice reading skills." SLJ 9/15
TV News Archive
"For televised news clips from 2009 to the present, the TV News Archive, a project of the Internet Archive, contains clips from over 700,000 shows. Use this site with students to compare and contrast how certain events are reported across media outlets. Results can be filtered by date, outlet, and language. The timeline slider allows users to capture news reports from specific dates. For example, if students are researching the 2011 Arab Uprisings in Egypt, search for Cairo, then narrow results to January 25, 2011, to find news reports from the beginning of the Egyptian revolution. The timeline tool provides a persistent link that can be added to websites, making this a useful way to provide students with a set of sources to analyze for classroom discussions or research projects.
The TV News Archive also features a Special Collections section and the previous day’s trending news." SLJ 9/15
Regional News Sources:
Al-Monitor
"Al-Monitor.com, a service of Al-Monitor, features news from the Middle East translated into English from Hebrew, Turkish, Persian, and Arabic. Covering culture and society, business, and politics, this site provides multiple views of current events in the Middle East. Browse the site by “Pulse” —for example, the Egypt Pulse or Syria Pulse—for country-specific headlines and issues. The Week in Review features an interactive timeline of stories about the Middle East from 2013 and 2014 and highlights the previous week’s top stories." SLJ 9/15
"AllAfrica.com, a website operated by AllAfrica, aggregates news from over 130 African news outlets and publishes content by their own reporters. Browse news by country or topic. Topics include business, development, entertainment, sports, and current issues affecting the continent. Use this site to have students read and learn about Africa from African perspectives. The country pages can be an excellent way to compare top headlines across countries, demonstrating the diversity of African countries, issues, and peoples." SLJ 9/15
